Summary: Good for recording, but interfacing weak... 2010-07-19
Comment: I bought this about 6 months ago. The recorder has great audio specs and lives up to the 'Sony" name.
But when downloading to a PC it had some issues:

1. NO LINUX support whatsoever!!! (Not recognized as a USB Mass Storage)
2. When downloading to Windows XP, it is PAINFULLY slow...

I am trying a new version of the Digital Voice Editor software today...

Summary: With only a little use, I can tell this is going to make my life easier. 2010-05-26
Comment: I have only used this voice recorder a few times. I got it for a heritage/geneaology project that I am doing. I use it to record conversations with my 94 year old aunt so I can collect the stories she tells and use them later in making heritage albums for my nephews. It works great so far! I haven't yet had to test battery life etc., but the sound quality is very good.

Summary: Great Product 2010-05-05
Comment: I purchased this to record a day long conference and it worked great. I was in a large hotel conference room, with about 130 people. This recorder had no problem picking up the speaker even though I was 4-5 rows back. The software works great, and once you have loaded it onto your computer it's easy to manipulate playback, even allows you to speed up the speakers voice to save time. All in all I'm very pleased and would purchase it again.

Comment: This product was easy to use and the directions were easy to understand.
The battery life should be a little better. Very good for people who don't have a lot of time
to study directions and very well priced.

Summary: Good for occassional dictation but not for anything more 2010-04-11
Comment: I have an Olympus DS 330, and I bought the Sony as a backup when I thought the Olympus needed repair (it turned out to only need reformatting). I do quite a lot of dictation, including both lengthy and brief documents.

The Sony has large buttons and is easy to use in the sense that it's easy to press the correct button to dictate, stop or listen to what was previously recorded. It also does a pretty good job of overwriting prior dictation in order to edit it. However, it has a major flaw that in my view makes it inadequate for anything more than casual dictation of relatively short memos or documents.

When using the Olympus to dictate it is a simple two step process: 1)push button, 2)speak. Using the Sony requires a three step process: 1) push button 2)wait, 3)speak. There is a time delay between when the "record" button is pushed (and an audible "beep" is heard) and when the unit actually begins recording. Consequently, unless I consciously wait a second or two after I hear the sound letting me know the unit is supposed to be recording the first few words of my dictation are cut off. It was driving the transcriptionist crazy, because each time I paused in my dictation the next few words wouldn't be recorded. That problem can be eliminated by waiting before speaking, but that forces the user to concentrate on the time delay rather than the thing being dictated, meaning it's a distraction. There is an even longer time delay when using the voice activation feature which renders that feature totally useless.

In summary, the Sony unit is okay for very casual dictation but the Olympus DS 330 is far superior.
