No solution after 3 weeks of Audacity forum support ideas for only one channel input to the Mac.
Tsir support sent a useless one line suggestion 5 days after I emailed them. Seems they could care less.
It appears to be an Audacity driver problem since the same unit and USB cable works on a Winblows 7 machine.
It may one day be fixed, but until then it is not acceptable for a Mac.

I own this device and one other very similar but made by a different manufacturer. It is a waste of money and time. The motor doesn't have enough power to transport the tape smoothly and so the resulting MP3 sounds like garbage. The tape was new so that wasn't the problem and it happened with both devices. Their price is indicative of the quality you're not getting.
